10 years ago Pipeline to a Cure was founded to celebrate the positive connection between the ocean and cystic fibrosis, and no other community understands this better than surfers. Legendary surfers and watermen Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, Kai Lenny and Jamie Mitchell have stepped up as honorary co-chairs of what has become one of the most popular and anticipated philanthropic events in Orange County CA. Now in its tenth year, Pipeline to a Cure has raised more than $3.5 million in net revenue to help find a cure for this inherited deadly disease. The ocean isn’t enough and more research and treatments are needed to ensure that everyone with cystic fibrosis can live a long and healthy life.
The annual summer gala, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will celebrate its 6th year in 2018. This premier event will once again be held at the elegant Wilmington Convention Center on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 6:00 pm. The evening features live music, a silent auction, featured guests, as well as sought after live auction packages.
Connection Between CF & Surfing:
We will be honoring the positive effect that surfing has on the health of children and adults with cystic fibrosis. In recent years, doctors in Australia realized that cystic fibrosis patients who surfed had significantly healthier lungs than non-surfing CF patients. They found that the inhalation of saltwater mist hydrates the lining of the lungs and assists in clearing bacteria-laden mucus. As a result of this discovery, a hypertonic saline solution was developed to mimic a “surf session” for CF patients to use on a daily basis
